“Through the Hourglass” is an album by drummer Grzegorz Masłowski’s quintet, showcasing the many facets of contemporary jazz. Alongside Masłowski’s own pieces you’ll hear works by the band’s saxophonists, a composition by Czech trumpeter Štěpanka Balcarová (a long-time collaborator) and a piece by the legendary Polish saxophonist Janusz Muniak, Masłowski’s musical mentor.

The group’s sound is built on the dialogue of two tenor saxophones, whose entwined voices give the music its distinctive colour and texture. Muniak’s piece shifts the palette: two soprano saxophones open up a fresh sonic space. Every track becomes a playground for improvisation, giving each musician room to reveal a personal style and creative vision.

Grzegorz Masłowski – short bio

A prize-winning jazz drummer, Masłowski has collected individual and ensemble honours at festivals such as Getxo Jazz (Spain), Jazz Juniors and Jazz nad Odrą. He holds a Young Poland 2016 scholarship and is a two-time Anděl winner for Jazz Album of the Year in the Czech Republic. His collaborators range from Janusz Muniak, Piotr Wojtasik and Anna Maria Jopek to Peter Bernstein and Elchin Shirinov. He has performed worldwide, appears on 20-plus releases, and is valued for his musicality, technique and tireless work ethic.
